A Vision for the Full Stadium Experience

By John Merrick

I envision a future where individuals with disabilities can fully participate in and enjoy experiences at venues like a baseball stadium – not just as spectators, but as valued members of the broader community. We should not be treated as kids or cheerleaders, or just on the side without the full inclusive experience.

So many times, people with disabilities are only able to get tickets in a big group and have a limited experience. I get my own ticket, sit next to a former classmate, go behind the stage, and have a full experience. This feels more inclusive to me than having to do everything with support staff and in a group.

I think it is so important to have connections with other professionals where we can learn from each other. When we are out in the community, we can utilize different connections to get interviews for jobs, understand where we are culturally, obtain recommendations, have new experiences, and get individual support. These little connections give opportunities to support each other. We can be valued as part of the community fabric.

For me, when it feels like my voice is minimal, and times are tough, I remember that the people I knew in the past can provide support in the moment. I can lean on my outside community when other people don’t believe in me or are speaking on my behalf. My experiences with minor league hockey, choir, dance, and media, give me resilience. Having educational experiences that are outside of the disability world has encouraged me and helped me reach my full potential. It helps me know that others are rooting for me and I’m part of a bigger community. Even when some of these people are no longer here, the care and voice they have in my life are healing for me and get me through the tough moments.

I want a world where ALL individuals with disabilities aren't just present in the "stadium" of life, but are actively playing the game, understanding its rules, contributing significantly in diverse roles, and forming deep connections throughout the entire venue.
